Abstract

This report summarizes the findings of a linguistic and sociolinguistic survey in the Okaba Subdistrict in Papua, Indonesia. Data were gathered through the use of wordlists, sociolinguistic questionnaires, as well as informal observation. The findings indicate that one village was of the Maklew language, one village was of the South Awyu language and the other villages were of the Marind language. The villages visited generally have strong vernacular language use in the home, while Indonesian is used in public domains. Each of these languages have potential for language development work.
