First Philippine Linguistic Institute
(April 2008) The first Philippine Linguistic Institute was held 31 March–11 April in Manila, Philippines. Eighty local and international students enrolled in courses of particular relevance to Philippine languages and linguistics, taught by leading researchers in the Philippine context.
The two-week institute offered morning and afternoon classes meeting four hours per day. Hosted by the University of the Philippines and supported by the National Commission for Culture and Arts, the institute was organized by three organizations:
- Linguistic Society of the Philippines
- Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino
- SIL Philippines
The curriculum included seven courses in comparative, descriptive and applied linguistics as well as sociolinguistic topics appropriate to the Philippines. SIL personnel taught the following three courses:
