Women in Literacy
SIL International Annual Report for 2003
Literacy
is key to language development and has always been one of SIL’s fundamental
activities. According to UNESCO, half of the world’s 875 million non-literates
speak a lesser-known language. In this 2003 Annual
Report (3.8 MB) you will meet some marvelous people whose
lives have been transformed and who have, in turn, transformed others’ lives
through literacy.
The United Nations has declared this to be the “Decade
of Literacy” and
2003–2004 to be the time to focus on “Gender and Literacy.” SIL,
in special consultative status with UNESCO, is recognized as a world
leader in language development and literacy efforts. However, this
report highlights for you not so much SIL literacy activities, but
the impact—lives empowered by literacy.
