Reference

Robinson, Jerry. 1989. "Ongoingness." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: general.

Summary

Desire for literacy varies greatly within Papua New Guinea. Some areas are developing fast, but many rural areas remain underdeveloped. Isolation caused by rugged terrain and lack of roads holds many places back. Often remote villages have little exposure to literature and see no use for reading and writing skills. Survey of books in a rural village would probably show the average family owns

  • one New Testament (in the trade language)
  • the local church hymn book
  • the church calendar with daily Scripture readings
  • perhaps an English version of the New Testament, and
  • maybe an English dictionary.

If a reader is not interested in Christian literature, there is usually nothing to read.
