Roberts, John R. 1991. "Orthography reform in Amele: Part 1." Notes on Literacy. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Describes proposals for orthographic reform in the Amele Language of Papua New Guinea. German missionary linguists, Wullenkord and Welsch, devised an orthography for Amele in the 1920s and 1930s. As a result of personal research in the Amele language, Roberts discovered certain difficulties with the existing orthography. Amele people also realized there were difficulties. From 1987 to 1989, the author worked with the Amele Orthography Committee (AOC) to revise the orthography.
