Reference

Reimer, Jean. 1985. "Gando becomes a written language." Notes on Literacy. Interest level: general.

Summary

Discusses a two-week writers workshop in Togo. Six participants, educated in French, spent the first week learning how to read and write Gangam. Spent last week teaching communication principles and writing stories each day. Listened to stories they had done and evaluated them. Students were very motivated and wanted another workshop. Workshop took place after the village people realized these women were committed to the project when they built a house rather than rented one. Made them more a part of the community and not just visitors.
