Read, C. 1985

Reference

Read, Charles. 1985. "Effects of phonology on beginning spelling: Some cross-linguistic evidence." In Olson, D., Torrance, and Hildyard 1985. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Examines one pattern (representation of nasals) in the beginning spelling of children who speak English, Dutch, and French to explain the oddities in children's spontaneous spellings.

Goal is to illustrate the segmentation, categorization, and multiple levels of structure essential to orthography. States that cross-linguistic evidence is essential to a real understanding of beginning spelling (there are common threads in spellings cross-linguistically).

Evaluation

May be useful to develop an orthography and to teach beginning readers and spellers. Is not useful for lay persons.
