Stage 2 guidelines for reading: Orthography

Objectives

Here are some orthography objectives for Stage 2 for reading:

To continue learning character systems, which will continue as long as you are learning vocabulary (forever!) By this stage you should be able to recognize the orthography and spelling of alphabetic and syllabary systems.

  • To recognize handwritten script as well as print forms of the orthography
Strategies

Here are some orthography strategies for Stage 2 guidelines for reading:

  • Sound-symbol association

Read written transcripts of stories while listening to an audio recording of the story.

  • Memorization and association

Set yourself a goal of learning a certain number of related characters every day, if learning a pictograph system.

  • Comparison

Get a language associate (LA) to make a handwritten page of printed text and compare the two versions.

Activities

Here are some orthography activities for Stage 2 guidelines for reading:

Read as much as possible the various kinds of materials you can understand. You might want to look for children's books, school books, or books with lots of captioned pictures.

If you have a pen-pal who will write to you in script, it may help you to become comfortable reading handwriting.
