Stage 2 guidelines for reading: Cultural framework

 

Objectives
 

Here are some cultural framework objectives for Stage 2 learners for reading:

 
  • To learn more about how the environment affects the way people act and think
  • To learn more about different institutions and groups of people within the society and how they relate to each other; particularly families, neighbors, friends, co-workers, and fellow citizens
  • To find out more about the core values and beliefs of a group and how pass them on to their children
  • To learn more about the different stages of life and important life passages
  • To learn about symbolic culture represented in literature
Strategies
 

Here are some cultural framework strategies for Stage 2 guidelines for reading:

 
  • Advance organization

    Read pertinent sections of the Themes for sociocultural exploration so you know what to look for and pay attention to. (see below)

  • Practice

    Look for texts that will help you understand various cultural themes.

  • Selective attention

    Look for information on specific sociocultural themes in what you read.

  • Read a variety of texts of different literary genres on various subjects.

    Tips:

    If you have to stop and look up too many words in a dictionary, the reading matter is probably too hard for your stage. Choose something easier.

    School books are a great source of information about what people think is important for their children to learn.
