Stage 1 guidelines for reading: Grammar

 

Objectives
 

Here are some grammar objectives for Stage 1 for reading:

 
  • To understand simple sentences of the following types in past or present tense:

    • Positive statements
    • Negative statements
    • Commands
    • Questions
  • To understand words, phrases, and simple sentences which include:

    • Descriptions
    • Identifications
    • Actions with direct objects
    • Actions without direct objects
    • Locations
    • Beneficiaries
    • Possessives
    • Manner
Strategies
 

Here are some grammar strategies for Stage 1 guidelines for reading:

 
  • Analysis

    Identify basic clause types and look for them in written materials or include them in the techniques you do with a language associate.

  • Practice

    Use some of the same techniques for sound/picture association as for listening comprehension, except place the written form of the word underneath the picture for reading.

    Read some very simple connected texts, using the vocabulary you have practiced. Look for children's books which control difficulty of grammar and vocabulary. Go through these books with a language associate (LA).
