Here are some cultural framework strategies for Stage 1 guidelines for reading:

• Observation

  Notice how writing is used in the society and what functions it serves. Do you see people reading newspapers and books? Are books used to enculturate children? Do children's books have moral or ethical content, as well as instructional purpose? What kinds of vocabulary or topics are addressed in easy reading material? What can you learn about the culture from these books?

• Pay attention to signs, maps, and clues to written symbols as you go around the community. Look for physical cues to help you decipher meaning.
